Bronze Bling for UCSD-TV

We needed needed a little more bling around here!

After a terrific showing at the Aurora Awards, UCSD-TV is adding to its 2013 tally with two bronze Telly Awards.

“Building It Better: Earthquake-Resilient Hospitals for the Future” nabbed the bronze in the Documentary category for its behind-the-scenes look at the rigorous earthquake testing UC San Diego researchers put their five-story mockup of a hospital through in order to better understand how the many complex systems within hospital buildings perform after earthquakes. Produced by UCSD-TV’s Rich Wargo, in partnership with the California Seismic Safety Commission, the program explores the history of seismic safety for California’s hospital infrastructure, and what is being done to secure its future.

Also taking home the bronze for documentary was “San Diego Opera Spotlight: Moby-Dick,” UCSD-TV producer John Menier’s in-depth look behind-the-scenes at the West Coast premiere of Jake Heggie’s “Moby-Dick,” based upon the classic novel by Herman Melville.

You also might recall our announcement last month that “The Skinny on Obesity: Sickeningly Sweet” was awarded the prestigious Silver Telly Award in the Health and Wellness category. Produced by UCSD-TV’s Rich Wargo and Jennifer Ford, the program is one of seven episodes in the popular “The Skinny on Obesity” series, which premiered on the UCTV Prime YouTube original channel in April 2012.

The Telly Awards is the premier award honoring the finest film and video productions, groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films, and outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs.

Congratulations to the UCSD-TV team!

Make Room on the Award Shelves!

It’s time to make some room on our award shelves!

We’re happy to report that a whopping five UCSD-TV programs have been honored with awards for excellence.

Gold is the metal of honor when it comes to our haul at the Aurora Awards. That’s because four very different UCSD-TV programs took home Gold Aurora statues.

The winners are:

Building it Better: Earthquake-Resilient Hospitals for the Future (Documentary/Project category), produced by Rich Wargo

Tan Dun’s Water Passion – La Jolla Music Society’s SummerFest 2012 (Music/Live Concert category) produced by John Menier

Colon Cancer Screening: Health Matters (Educational/Fitness, Health), produced by Jennifer Ford

San Diego Opera Spotlight : Moby Dick (Documentary/Cultural category), produced by John Menier

We also rose to the top at the Telly Awards, where The Skinny on Obesity: Sickeningly Sweet, produced by UCSD-TV’s Rich Wargo and Jennifer Ford for the YouTube original channel UCTV Prime, won the Silver Telly for Internet/Online Programs in the Health and Wellness category.

The Aurora Awards are an annual independent film and video competition that honors excellence in commercials, cable programming, documentaries, industrial, instructional and corporate videos.

The Telly Awards honor the very best film and video productions, groundbreaking online video content, and outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs.

Congratulations to everyone on the UCSD-TV team!

Beaming in Bronze

No, that’s not a tan you’re seeing (it is only February, after all).

We’re all bronzed out after learning that four UCSD-TV produced programs have received Bronze Telly Awards, a competition honoring the very best film and video productions, groundbreaking online video content, and outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs.

Our arts producer, John Menier, has his hands full with three of the stunning statues in three different categories:

“La Jolla Symphony & Chorus: Color” took home the bronze in Live Events;

“San Diego Opera Spotlight: Faust” won in Documentary;

and “Star Struck,” a preview of artist Do Ho Suh’s new Stuart Collection installation,“Fallen Star,” took home the bronze in the Cultural category.

Jennifer Ford, our prolific health producer, also nabbed herself a bronze Telly in the Health and Fitness category for her moving documentary, “Parkinson’s Disease: A Dose of Hope.”

Congratulations to Jennifer, John and the entire UCSD-TV team!

UCSD-TV Grabs Aurora Awards for UCSD@50 and Diabetes Programs!

We’re thrilled to announce that two UCSD-TV produced programs, “UCSD@50” and “Taking Control of Your Diabetes,” have received Aurora Awards!

Taking top honors with the Platinum Best of Show Award in the News Magazine/Interview category is the November 2010 edition of “UCSD@50,” UCSD-TV’s year-long magazine program honoring UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary. This memorable installment, hosted by Dr. David Granet, profiles UCSD By Design, the book and speaker series about UC San Diego’s unique built environment, and features interviews with Arts and Humanities Dean Seth Lerer, campus architect Boone Hellman and author Dirk Sutro. The 30-minute program also includes research on fighting antibiotic resistant “superbugs” at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, a conversation with “Avatar” actor and UCSD alumnus Dileep Rao, a wrap-up of the “Meet the Beach” Volunteer 50 clean-up event, and a chat with UCSD staffer Darren McKay, a junior development engineer at UCSD’s Englekirk Structural Engineering Center.

All “UCSD@50” programs are available online and make sure to tune in April 11 at 8pm for the the next installment, hosted by UCSD’s Barbara Sawrey. The six-part series wraps up in June, along with UCSD’s celebratory anniversary year.

UCSD-TV’s “Taking Control of Your Diabetes” (TCOYD) series was also a big winner, taking home a Gold Award in the Fitness/Health category for its episode on weight management. This long-running series hosted by Dr. Steven Edelman was totally revamped in 2010, making this award especially meaningful.  All TCOYD programs are available online and the 2011 season premieres in June.

The Aurora Awards is a international competition designed to recognize excellence in the film and video industries. It specifically targets products, programs and commercials that would not normally have the opportunity to compete on a national level, by focusing on non-national commercials, regional or special interest entertainment and corporate sponsored film and video. Entries come from across the US, and abroad.

UCSD-TV Opera & SummerFest Programs Nab Telly Awards

We’re proud to announce that two UCSD-TV produced arts programs with longtime community partners have been awarded Bronze Telly Awards!

San Diego Opera Spotlight: Romeo and Juliet: A behind-the-scenes look at San Diego Opera’s 2010 production of Gounod’s Shakespeare-inspired masterpiece.

This is the fifth award for the Opera Spotlight series, which UCSD-TV and San Diego Opera have co-produced since 1995 — including this year with San Diego Opera’s 2011 season.

La Jolla Music Society: SummerFest 2009: Stewart Copeland, Composer: Four original compositions by percussionist Stewart Copeland, best known as drummer for superstar rock band The Police.
This is the first award for the SummerFest series and, after twelve years of partnering with La Jolla Music Society, we are confident it won’t be the last.

UCSD-TV is no stranger to the Telly Awards, having picked up fifteen of them since 2004. The Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web. Since 1978, their mission has been to strengthen the visual arts community by inspiring, promoting, and supporting creativity. The 31st Annual Telly Awards received over 13,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents.

Congratulations to our talented arts producer John Menier and, of course, to our valued community partners, San Diego Opera and La Jolla Music Society.
