Dr. Steven Edelman talks with noted pediatric endocrinologist Dr. Sherry Franklin and her daughter Victoria, who has type 1 diabetes, for a unique perspective on how to live successfully with the disease.

Dr. Sherry Franklin received her medical degree in 1995, at Texas A&M University. She began her clinical training in general pediatrics at Greenville Memorial Hospital in South Carolina, and became board certified to practice in 1999.

Dr. Franklin furthered her training in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at the UCLA Medical Center. She trained with world renowned experts in diabetes and disorders of growth.

As part of her training, she was involved with numerous research projects, enriching her dedication to keep current in her field. She was also awarded an appointment as a Clinical Instructor at UCLA. She became board certified in pediatric endocrinology in 2003

TCOYD’s resident nutrition expert Janice Baker has a helpful tip for eating smart and taking control of your diabetes – and your diet!

Large portions and rich foods are hard to resist when you arrive at a restaurant hungry! About an hour before you go out, have a snack consisting of an 8 ounce glass of water, a piece of whole fruit, and a low fat protein source such as a string cheese, hard cooked egg or a slice of lean turkey. You will be amazed at how much easier it will be to control your food intake. Remember to order all sauces and dressings on the side and don’t be afraid to ask for substitutions!

Dr. Steven Edelman talks with sleep medicine expert, Dr. Jose Loredo, about the latest research on the disorder. Then JC Johnson, a type 2 diabetic, joins the show to share his story of how successfully managing his sleep apnea changed his life.

Dr. Jose S. Loredo received his undergraduate education and medical education at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California where he graduated with a combined MD and MS degree in 1984. After specializing in Internal Medicine, he practiced general medicine for four years in rural Alabama. Since 1992, Dr. Loredo has been at UC San Diego where he finished his Pulmonary Critical Care Fellowship and Sleep Medicine training. He also completed a MPH in Epidemiology at San Diego State University in 2005.

Dr. Loredo’s medical practice is divided into patient care, medical education and clinical research. His clinical practice focuses primarily on the evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders. He is active in the teaching of medical students, Internal Medicine residents and Pulmonary fellows in the area of Pulmonary/ Critical Care/Sleep medicine. As part of his teaching duties, Dr. Loredo attends the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the San Diego VA Hospital, and teaches sleep medicine during sleep clinic at the UCSD Sleep Medicine Center and at the San Diego VA Pulmonary Sleep Disorders clinic.

An active clinical researcher, Dr. Loredo has received funding from the NIH for a large epidemiological study of sleep-health amongst Hispanics in San Diego County. Dr. Loredo is co-investigator in the largest NIH sponsored research project that seeks to follow longitudinally the health of 16,000 Hispanics in the US. Other research projects include the investigation of the role of peripheral chemoreceptors in the development of hypertension in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and the association of sleep apnea with asthma. Dr. Loredo has published on the role of arousals from sleep in the activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) of patients with OSA and has published works documenting the effectiveness of CPAP and supplemental oxygen in improving sleep quality in OSA.

Encourage sleep with these simplistic breathing techniques. Lay in your bed, on your back, with your arms down by your sides and your palms facing up. Close your eyes then inhale for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 4 seconds and exhale for 4 seconds. Repeat this pattern 8 times and you will be on your way to a restful nights sleep.
