Daughter of the Regiment Gets the OperaTalk! Treatment

Though war doesn’t immediately come to mind as fertile ground for levity, there have been many stage and film comedies with a military setting: Mr. Roberts, Operation Petticoat, Dr. Strangelove, MASH, and Stripes, to name but a few.  This is definitely not the case in opera, where war is usually presented as a grim backdrop to drama and hilarity does not ensue.

Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment (La Fille du Régiment) is that rare and lively exception to this rule, a musical soufflé about a rambunctious tomboy who is adopted by a group of soldiers.  Set in the waning days of World War II in San Diego Opera’s production, it has everything you want in a comic opera – farcical plot, star-crossed young lovers, larger-than-life characters, scheming relatives, rousing numbers for the chorus, a plethora of vocal gymnastics (including the famous nine high Cs for the tenor) and, of course, a happy if improbable ending.

In this new edition of San Diego OperaTalk!, premiering tonight (Oct. 23) at 8pm (and online now), Nick Reveles explains it all to you in his inimitable style, including the opera’s origins and the historic role of women in the military.  Who knew war could be so much fun?

Watch Daughter of the Regiment – San Diego OperaTalk! with Nick Reveles tonight at 8pm or online now.

Filner and DeMaio Clash at UCSD (and on UCSD-TV)

Bob Filner and Carl DeMaio have certainly kept San Diego’s mayoral race interesting, and their October 13 debate at UC San Diego was no exception.

Organized by UC San Diego students and moderated by San Diego 6 news anchor Heather Myers, there were some tense moments as the candidates took the stage (or didn’t) and tussled over issues ranging from the economy to negative campaigning.

If you couldn’t make it, don’t worry because UCSD-TV’s cameras were there to capture all the action. Watch it tonight (October 22) at 8pm on UCSD-TV or stream it online now. And whatever you do, remember to vote on November 6!

The Atlantic Meets the Pacific: Predicting Election 2012

There was plenty of excitement earlier this month when two coasts collided at UC San Diego. No, it wasn’t some strange weather phenomenon but the second annual “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific,” hosted by The Atlantic magazine and UCSD. The sold-out, three-day forum brought together some of the country’s most fascinating thinkers to talk about the future of energy, health and technology.

We’ll be premiering these outstanding discussions in November, but there was one that simply couldn’t wait. In “Predicting Election 2012,” veteran political reporter Ron Brownstein of the National Journal and Republican strategist Steve Schmidt analyze the homestretch of the presidential campaign with input from James Fallows, National Correspondent for The Atlantic; Sam Popkin, UC San Diego professor and author of “The Candidate;” James Fowler, a UC San Diego professor who specializes in the biochemistry of political behavior: and longtime pollster Dan Yankelovich. Look for some fresh insight from these lively and connected pundits as they call the fates of Mitt Romney, Barack Obama and the next Congress.

Watch “Predicting Election 2012” on October 26 at 7pm — or online now — and make sure to come back in November for more in “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific” series, including conversations with Dreamworks’ Stacey Snider, Facebook’s Chris Cox, “The Happiness Project” author Gretchen Rubin and much more.
