UCSD@50: The Celebration Continues

UC San Diego’s 50th anniversary celebration is officially underway, so it’s time for the November edition of UCSD@50, our year-long series highlighting the people and projects that make this institution great.

Premiering November 1 at 8pm on TV and online (and re-airing throughout the month), this installment is hosted by Dr. David Granet and features Arts and Humanities Dean Seth Lerer, campus architect Boone Hellman and author Dirk Sutrow as they explore UCSD’s built environment.

The program also includes research on fighting antibiotic resistant “superbugs” at the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; a profile of “Inception” and “Avatar” actor and UCSD alumnus Dileep Rao; a wrap-up of the “Meet the Beach” Volunteer 50 clean-up event; and a chat with UCSD staffer Darren McKay, a junior development engineer at UCSD’s Englekirk Structural Engineering Center.

We’re also kicking off UCSD By Design, an anniversary-related speaker series about the history and future development of UCSD’s built environment.

Academic Medicine in Action

We often hear terms like “academic medicine” and “bench to bedside,” but what do they actually mean in terms of patient care? This month, Dr. David Brenner, Dean of UC San Diego School of Medicine, visits “Health Matters” to help us understand the concept and value of academic medicine, and how it enhances our community. And tune in for two new UCSD-TV health programs that show academic medicine in action.

From Peace Talks to Gender Justice

Monica McWilliams, the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission and a signer of the historic 1998 Good Friday Agreement with Ireland, addresses the challenges of turning the promise of peace accords into stable post-conflict societies through the inclusion of women in political and civil leadership. McWilliams is presented as part of the 2010 Women’s Peacemakers Conference hosted by the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego.

Watch the latest Building It Better, debuting September 29, as UCSD-TV covers a comprehensive test of metal buildings conducted at UCSD’s Englekirk Structural Engineering Center, home of the largest outdoor shake table in North America. You will see some of the most extreme shaking ever shown as three different lightweight metal buildings are subjected to incredible — perhaps even naturally impossible — seismic loads.

Full-scale metal building test specimens like this one were subjected to some serious shaking

Then in October,  take a look at how a pioneering wind energy provider, Escondido, California-based Oak Creek Energy Systems, is looking to the future of wind power by collaborating with UCSD professors and students at the Englekirk Center to gather seismic performance data on wind turbine structures in order to advance the next generation of wind turbines. We recently visited Tehachapi Pass, the richest wind energy field in California, to see the future of renewable energy resources evolving right before our eyes. And you’ll get to see it too, along with the most powerful (and humongous!) wind turbines in production – and learn how they are just the tiny siblings of what the future has in store for wind energy.

The future of wind energy will be even bigger and taller than these, already 280 feet high at the turbine

In honor of UC San Diego’s momentous 50th anniversary, UCSD-TV  presents a yearlong magazine series highlighting the diverse and  extraordinary work being done every day on this campus.

The first installment, premiering September 13 at 8pm, introduces us to  UCSD’s Center for Community Well-Being, a collaborative focused on improving the lives of school-age children in Southeastern San Diego; the groundbreaking brain research taking place at UCSD’s Center of Autism Excellence; and a look at how Scripps Institution of Oceanography is shaping the future of medicines and how scientists will monitor the health of our planet.

All broadcast dates and online video available here: UCSD@50

Building It Better: Testing the Limits

Lightweight metal buildings like airplane hangars, warehouses, gymnasia and industrial buildings comprise an ever greater share of steel structures built today. But current building codes don’t address the unique designs employed by these innovative structures.

Tune in to see all the action when researchers from UCSD’s Jacobs School of Engineering and the Metal Building Manufacturers of America visit the UCSD Englekirk Structural Engineering Center’s high performance shake table to subject these metal building designs to some of the most extreme earthquake shaking ever recorded.

Jazz That Jams

After five days immersed in workshops, jam sessions, and the history and theory of jazz music, world-renowned instructors and talented students from this summer’s UC San Diego Jazz Camp come together for a finale concert of original compositions and contemporary jazz standards.
