Meeting the Challenge of Conflicts of Interest

It is understood that academia and industry both have essential roles in bringing new and improved clinical products to the public. However, it is also generally agreed that academic-industry collaborations are tarnished by both real and perceived consequences of financial conflicts of interest. The first program in the Meeting the Challenge of Conflicts of Interest series from the Center for Ethics in Science and Technology brings together Dr. Gary Firestein of UC San Diego and Dr. Jeremy Barton of Pfizer for a clarifying conversation about this important challenge to medical research.

In Memoriam: Reach for the Stars with Sally Ride

Reach for the Stars with Sally Ride — UCTV's "Reach for the Stars with Sally Ride"

Sadly, we learned today that Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, UC San Diego Professor Emeritus, and an advocate for science education, passed away at her home in San Diego. She was 61.

The UC San Diego campus, where Ride became Professor of Physics in 1989, is already relatively quiet this summer break, but the news of Ride’s premature passing due to pancreatic cancer has created a more somber tone. Her loss will obviously also be felt at the San Diego-based company she founded, Sally Ride Science, which provided science education materials and assistance to teachers and schools.

In February 2011, Ride visited UC Berkeley to deliver the UC Berkeley Physics Regent’s Lecture titled “Reach for the Stars with Sally Ride.” In the talk, which aired on UCSD-TV last April, Ride advocates for a stronger foundation of math and science education by describing her own path into the space program. There’s no better way to honor this distinguished woman’s memory than listening to her heartfelt dream that every student — not just future rocket scientists — learn to love math and science.

It Came from Riverside: Inside the World’s Largest Collection of Science Fiction & Fantasy

Just in time for Comic-Con…Imagine a place where everything science fiction — manuscripts, fanzines, first editions, posters and more — was carefully collected, preserved and made accessible to the public. Actually, you don’t have to imagine it because it exists on the UC Riverside campus in the form of the Eaton Collection, the world’s largest, publicly accessible collection of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and utopian fiction.

If this gets your geek flag a-flutterin’, then don’t miss the UCTV Prime original series “It Came from Riverside," which ventures inside the collection for a peek at some of its treasures and conversations with writers and professors with some intriguing thoughts on science fiction’s growing acceptance in academia.

Marré’s presentation was the keynote address at a day-long Career Boost Camp sponsored by UC San Diego Alumni and UCSD Extension’s Center for Life/Work Strategies. The Human Dimensions of Climate Change

The annual Keeling Lecture honors the memory of distinguished Scripps Oceanography professor Charles David Keeling and his invaluable contributions to climate science and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. This year, they welcomed renowned environmental author Bill McKibben, lauded by Time Magazine as the planet’s best green journalist, who brings deep insight into the human dimensions of climate change. Premieres July 11 at 8pm.

Remembering Ray Bradbury

Today we remember legendary writer Ray Bradbury, who passed away this week at the age of 91.

A prolific writer who helped elevate the literary reputation of the science fiction genre, Bradbury has also been one of the most popular guests on the “Writer’s Symposium by the Sea” series from Pt. Loma Nazarene University.

He appeared in 2001 to talk about his craft in “An Evening with Ray Bradbury,”, and sat down with host Dean Nelson for an in-depth and frank conversation about his life and love of writing. Both videos are online and ready for you to enjoy and fondly remember this iconic American writer.
